Gastroscopy (or rather oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy) is the examination of the gullet, stomach and duodenum with the aid of flexible optical equipment (gastroscope).
During the examination the 9 mm thin gastroscope is pushed through the oral cavity into the gullet, stomach and finally duodenum (upper section of the small intestine). During this process any pathological changes in the region of these organs can be detected and therapeutic measures taken where appropriate. If necessary tissue samples can be taken painlessly during the examination (e.g. for detailed tissue analysis or the investigation of the presence of Helicobacter pylori) by means of small forceps.
On the day of the examination you should have an empty stomach i.e. you should have taken no solid or liquid nourishment for at least 4 hours. If desired we will give you a sedative injection before the gastroscopy. You will sleep for 20-30 minutes and will be in one of our monitored rest cubicles for the entire time. Legally you are not allowed to drive for 24 hours following this. However, the examination can also be performed under local anaesthetic of the mouth and throat, and here your driving ability is of course not affected.
